Helsinki, Finland #004

I read somewhere before we left for Helsinki that if you want to look like a local, don’t feed the seagulls. We may live inland and don’t get to see many seagulls here, but we figured that was common knowledge everywhere. Well, it seems that the case with the seagulls of Helsinki is don’t eat in front of them at all!

Helsinki, Finland #003

Our last full day in Helsinki was to be our “shopping” day, buying souvenirs and gifts for the family. However, we were a little delayed in our start at Kauppatori, as the sky turned darker and darker – the obvious sign of impending rain. Only minutes after this photo was taken, the heavens opened, and my new and as-yet-unwashed blue jeans dyed my new cream canvas shoes forever with the memory of that shopping morning …

Weekly Photo Challenge: One Shot, Two Ways

The Weekly Photo Challenge for this week is one shot, two ways.

In Senaatintori (Senate Square), there is one of the most iconic buildings of Helsinki’s skyline. The Helsingin tuomiokirkko (Helsinki Cathedral) is a magnificent structure, designed by Carl Ludvig Engel. He laid the first cornerstone on 25th June 1830 and the cathedral was finally consecrated 15th February 1852.

At first look, those stairs look easily conquerable right? But, once you get closer, they are very imposing – this second picture was taken from half-way up!

Helsinki, Finland #001

This time last week we were starting our first day of sightseeing in Helsinki, Finland, visiting Suomenlinna Fortress and Korkeasaari Zoo. The view from Kauppatori out to the South Harbour became one of my favourite views in Helsinki, and I will definitely be sharing plenty of my pictures of that view, as well as from all over Helsinki, over the coming months.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Foreshadow

The Weekly Photo Challenge for this week is foreshadow.

I love this challenge – it’s come at a perfect time! For those of you that have been here before, you will know that I have just come back from 5 days in Helsinki, Finland. Unfortunately, due to a small carry-on bag limit with an 8kg weight limit, I wasn’t able to even take my HP Mini to post daily. I didn’t mind though, and instead I will spread out my pictures (1,483 in total) and stories over the next few months 🙂

So, my choice for this challenge is a picture I took from our hotel window. We stayed in the Hilton hotel at Helsinki-Vantaa airport, and had a view of a couple of the runways. I loved standing at my entirely soundproof window watching as the planes came in, foreshadowing adventures to come for those just visiting, and the excitement of coming home for residents …

Until next time …

Day #209

SunriseSo, my sister Abby and I are off to Helsinki, Finland tomorrow! It’s been a dream of mine for many years to visit, and finally we’re getting to go. I will do my best to post about our stay, but we’re only there 3 full days (Tuesday-Thursday), so we may be too busy cramming in every corner of this amazing city!

Until next time …

Helsinki calling!’re booked! My sister and I will be spending 4 nights and 5 days in Helsinki, Finland, from 29th July-2nd August. It is a dream come true for both of us – I have always wanted to visit Finland, and it seems that dream rubbed off on my sister too.

I had always promised my sister that when she turned 18, we would take a couple of months out and tour Australia. That was when I was 16, and a lot of things changed since then. In light of the fact that I will be moving to USA next year, we compromised and I said I would take her anywhere in Europe, just the 2 of us, and I’d pay for it all.

You see, no one in my family likes flying, except me and my sister. I don’t want her to lose out on the amazing experience of travelling, because I know she won’t go alone! So, as a present for her 15th birthday (which is today!), and a gift to myself for my 21st (on 19th July), we will be spending 5 days in Helsinki!

Time to find that old Finnish phrasebook and get practising …

Hauskaa päivänjatkoa!
